Getting Started with SWORL

Welcome to SWORL! You've just opened your SWORL controller, and it's time to dive in. This guide will quickly help you get started, providing easy-to-follow answers, helpful tips, and step-by-step instructions when you need them.

Your SWORL controller comes preconfigured with a versatile default layout suitable for many games (especially fighting games), but you can easily customize buttons for your comfort and preferred style of play.

1. Customizing Your SWORL Controller (Quick Adjustments)

Your SWORL controller offers quick, on-the-fly adjustments directly from the controller itself—no web app required! Here are some fast, convenient customizations:

  • LED Brightness:
    Hold the Edit button and press Up/Down arrows to adjust LED brightness.

  • Analog Sensitivity:
    Hold the Edit button and press Left/Right arrows to adjust sensitivity (Levels 1–5, default is 1).

  • Switch Profiles:
    Press the Profile button, then select your desired profile from the five buttons located at the top right.

  • SOCD Mode (DPAD functionality):
    Change SOCD settings by holding down any directional arrow key (e.g., hold Up for Capcom mode).

  • Change Emulation Mode:
    Hold one of the top five buttons on the right side while plugging in your controller to select the desired emulation mode.

2. Using the SWORL Web App (Browser Setup)

The SWORL Web App offers extensive customization for your controller. It requires a Chromium-based browser (e.g., Chrome, Edge). Other browsers may work if they support the Web Bluetooth protocol, but they haven't been tested.

Enabling Bluetooth on Your Browser:

To connect your SWORL controller via Bluetooth, enable the "Experimental Web Platform features" flag:

  1. Open Chrome Flags Menu:

    • Launch Google Chrome.
    • Type chrome://flags into the address bar and hit Enter.

  2. Enable Experimental Features:

    • In the search bar, type "Experimental Web Platform features".
    • Set the dropdown next to it to "Enabled".

  3. Restart Chrome:

    • Click "Relaunch" to restart Chrome and apply the changes.

You're now ready to fully customize your SWORL controller using the web app!

 

3. Connecting Your SWORL Controller to the Web App

Follow these simple steps to connect your SWORL controller to the SWORL configurator:

  1. Open the SWORL Configurator website (URL provided separately).

    • Ensure your controller is powered on and nearby (you can leave it connected to your console if close, or plug it into your PC).

  2. Activate Pairing Mode on your SWORL:

    • Hold the Edit button for 5 seconds until the controller enters pairing mode.

  3. Pair Your Controller:

    • On the configurator website, click "Connect".
    • Locate your SWORL controller in the list of available Bluetooth devices.
    • Click "Pair".

  4. Configurator loads:

    • After pairing successfully, the configurator interface will load, allowing you to customize your controller.

4. Remapping Your SWORL Controller (Advanced Guide)

Before diving in too deep - check out the SWORL remapping guide.

The SWORL Configurator allows you extensive remapping flexibility to match your gaming style and comfort. Below are some detailed tips for optimal button placement, especially for First-Person Shooters (FPS), general gaming, and hand-size considerations.

FPS Game Remapping Tips:

  • Thumb Placement:
    Keep your thumb on the analog stick (LS/RS). Arrange frequently used actions (e.g., jump, crouch, slide, reload) on buttons that your index and middle fingers can comfortably reach without repositioning your thumb.

  • Index Finger Placement:
    Map your primary actions like firing and sprint to buttons that your index fingers naturally rest on (typically triggers or bumpers).

  • Middle Finger Placement:
    Reserve the middle finger for secondary, yet critical actions—such as Aim (ADS) grenades, melee attacks, or special abilities—to buttons adjacent to your index finger positions.

This setup ensures you never have to lift your thumb off the stick, improving aim control and reaction time during firefights.

Generic Game Remapping Advice:

  • The default layout is not ideal for games that rely heavily on triggers. Instead, do not strain your hand - but consider moving the triggers to where your index and middle fingers naturally rest.
  • Prioritize your index and middle fingers for the most frequent and repetitive actions.
  • Place less frequently used buttons further away, utilizing your ring and pinky fingers sparingly to avoid fatigue.
  • Enable features like "always sprint" in-game, reducing repeated button presses and simplifying your layout.
  • Some predefined remapping files will be posted in our discord - you can simply download these and apply them. The default layout is there as well.

Adapting Layout for Hand Size:

The SWORL controller layout can easily be modified for hand-size comfort:

  • Medium to Large Hands:
    Maintain the default button configuration, allowing your index fingers to cover rightmost 8 buttons by default.

  • Smaller Hands:
    Consider shifting buttons one column to the left to comfortably reach primary actions with your index and middle fingers. This can reduce strain and maintains efficient control access.

If the layout feels uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to experiment and adjust until you find what suits your hand size best.

Saving and Sharing Profiles:

Your customized control schemes can be saved as one of five profiles directly on your SWORL controller. These profiles can also be exported, shared, and discussed within our Discord community, helping you find optimized setups for specific games and characters.

 

5. Using the SWORL Configurator (Additional Features)

Beyond button remapping, the SWORL Configurator offers extra tools to manage and personalize your controller:

  • Manage Controller Settings:
    Easily adjust and fine-tune detailed controller options, including button sensitivity, SOCD modes, and emulation settings.

  • Firmware Updates:
    Check for and apply the latest firmware updates directly from the configurator, keeping your SWORL running smoothly with the newest features and fixes.

  • LED Animations:
    Customize LED colors, brightness, and animations to give your SWORL a unique look.

Important: After making your adjustments, always click "Save" and wait for the confirmation message to ensure settings are properly applied to your SWORL controller.

 

6. Optimizing SWORL Performance: Using Wired Mode on PS5

For the best performance with your SWORL controller, it's recommended to use it in wired mode. This minimizes input lag and ensures a stable connection. To set your PS5 to prioritize a wired USB connection for controllers, follow these steps:

  1. Connect Your Controller via USB:

    • Plug your SWORL controller into the PS5 using a compatible USB cable.

  2. Access PS5 Settings:

    • From the PS5 home screen, navigate to Settings (the gear icon in the top right corner).

  3. Navigate to Accessories:

    • Scroll down and select Accessories.

  4. Select Controller (General):

    • Within the Accessories menu, choose Controller (General).

  5. Change Communication Method:

    • Select Communication Method.
    • Choose Use USB Cable.

By selecting "Use USB Cable," your PS5 will prioritize the wired connection over Bluetooth when the controller is connected via USB. This setting helps reduce input latency and provides a more reliable gaming experience.

 

7. Keeping Your SWORL Clean and Properly Stored

Proper handling and storage keep your SWORL controller in excellent condition:

Cable Care:

  • Unplug the cable when not in use.
  • Loop the cable gently, making loops approximately 4 inches across.
  • Avoid sharp bends or tight loops to prevent internal wire fraying, ensuring a longer cable life.

Cleaning and Storage:

  • Store your controller in the included carrying case to protect it from dust, scratches, and damage during transport.
  • Clean the carrying case with a slightly damp, slightly soapy cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. No alcohol based cleaning wipes!
  • Keep your controller and case clean by avoiding greasy hands and foods that might stain or discolor the surface.

8. Troubleshooting Common SWORL Issues

If you're experiencing trouble with your SWORL controller, follow these quick troubleshooting tips:

  • Firmware, Connectivity and Power Issues (Bluetooth or Wired)

    • If playing on PC, consider plugging in to a powered USB hub. This can help isolate any potential power issues.
    • Ensure your cable has both power and data lines. 
    • If swapping cables you can easily remove/replace the rubber USB guide at the back of the controller to make room for different USB cables.
    • If using the web configurator, check that Bluetooth is enabled on your PC and your bluetooth drivers are up to date (also review browser setup as discussed above). PC bluetooth issues might be solved by adding a cheap dedicated bluetooth dongle.
    • Your controller ships with the latest firmware. Firmware updates will require the web app and may take a little time to complete. Occasionally there may be a second firmware step. Firmware instructions will be published as updates are delivered.

  • Buttons or Keys Not Responding

    • Check for debris around buttons; gently clean if necessary.
    • Confirm your custom mapping hasn't unintentionally disabled the buttons (use the configurator to adjust if needed). 
    • Check to be sure which profile you are on. Try switching profiles or resetting to default settings.

  • LED Lights Not Functioning Correctly

    • Check with the configurator to see if LEDs are turned off
    • Verify LED brightness settings by holding Edit and pressing Up/Down.
    • Restart the controller; reconnect and test again.
