How to Get Custom Artwork for Your MICRO, SWORL or SLIDER (and How to Swap It)
Short answer: download the template for your controller, drop your art into it, and order a print and cut from Focus Attack. It arrives cut to shape. Then remove the clear top, swap the insert, and close it back up. No soldering, no rewiring.
Which controllers take custom art?
Any JunkFood controller with a clear top has a flat art insert sitting underneath it:
- Snack Box MICRO with the Artwork Case. Solid colour and one-piece cases do not hold art. If you have one of those, purchase the Artwork Case for the MICRO first.
- MICRO XL with the XL Artwork Case. This fits white PCB builds only, not the older green PCB.
- SWORL, both Basic and Multiconsole.
- SLIDER, every layout.
Where to get it printed
Focus Attack's FA Plexworks service prints your file and cuts it to the exact shape of your controller, button holes included. Pick the page that matches your controller:
| Controller | Focus Attack print and cut | Price at time of writing |
|---|---|---|
| Snack Box MICRO (Artwork Case) | MICRO Art Case print and cut | $12.95 |
| MICRO XL (XL Artwork Case) | MICRO XL Art Case print and cut | $14.95 |
| SWORL | SWORL print and cut | $14.95 |
All three, plus the older Snack Box panels, are listed together on Focus Attack's Junk Food Arcades artwork page.
SLIDER owners: Focus Attack does not list a SLIDER print yet. We will update this post when one is available. Ask in our Discord for the current options.
How to get your art done
- Download the template. Focus Attack hosts Photoshop templates for the MICRO, MICRO XL and SWORL on its Junkfood Custom Arcades template page. Each one is a .zip file.
-
Place your art. Open the template, put your image on its own layer, and keep faces, logos and text clear of the button holes and the outer edge.
Be sure to the art covers more than the area needed for cutting out the controller. Failure to do that will leave ugly bright white edges.
Turn off the layers that show the guides
Note: instructions for all of this are in the photoshop file - Save the file. PSD is recommended. TIFF, JPG, PDF and PNG are also accepted, up to 250 MB.
- Order the print. On the product page for your controller, choose a paper type, upload the file and check out.
- Wait for it. Focus Attack asks for 7 to 10 business days to process custom orders. You can follow the order in their Custom Job Tracker.
Their step-by-step ordering guide covers the rest.
Use art you have the right to print. If you want something made for you, plenty of FGC artists take fight stick commissions, and they usually know these templates already.
How to swap the artwork
Unplug the controller first, and work on a clean, soft surface so the clear top does not pick up scratches.
Snack Box MICRO and MICRO XL (Artwork Case)
- Turn the controller over and remove the 4 corner case screws.
- Separate the clear top from the rest of the case.
- Lift out the old insert and lay the new one in, lining up the button holes.
- Refit the top and screws. Snug is enough. Do not overtighten.
SWORL
- Lift off the clear top. It is held by magnets, so no tools are needed.
- Swap the insert, lining it up with the buttons and thumb domes.
- Set the top back down and let the magnets seat it.
SLIDER
- Remove the clear magnetic acrylic top.
- Swap the art insert.
- Replace the top.
Tips for a clean result
- Handle the print by its edges. Fingerprints show under a clear top.
- Wipe dust off the underside of the top before you close it.
- Take care when opening the packaging so the sealing tape does not touch the printed face.
- Keep the old insert flat in a book or sleeve. You can swap back any time.
Common questions
Can I print the art myself?
Yes. The templates are free to download. The hard part is getting the print size correct and cutting the button holes cleanly, which is why most players order a print and cut.
Does custom art affect how the controller plays?
No. The insert sits flat under the top and does not touch the switches.
My MICRO has a solid colour case. Can I add art?
Not on that controller case. Move your board into an Artwork Case and you can.
